Program: kinetic morphologies

 Concept: The project derives its core characteristics from examining the natural phenomena of a vampire squid, whose main distinguishable aspect is its capability to turn itself inside-out by a process of inversion. We have extracted two main aspects from the phenomena: soft body tissue (elastic, stretchable material,transformable by the movement of its adjacent parts) and hard body tissue (stiff material, non-transformable but translational through rotation around a point axis). Rigorous testing has showcased numerous opportunities for continuous spatial differentiation by the utilization of such a structure. Its potentials have been implemented in The London Design Museum, replacing its existing glazed atrium on the riverfront with a continuously changing structure which regulates levels of openness and enclosure, differentiates spatial configurations, light permeability and specific views to its surroundings.
